The Tiny Gallery in Brussels hosts a personalised workshop on cyanotype photography, a process that stands out for its simplicity and emotional depth — tailored for both seasoned artists and curious amateurs, requiring no prior expertise but creativity. Participants begin with images from their phones or cameras, hand-coat natural paper with cyanotype chemicals, expose it to UV light, and apply finishing treatments to transform simple photos into Prussian blue prints. This workshop focuses on the Vandijk Brown Print, one of the earliest photographic processes using silver bromide. Participants transform any digital photograph — even one from a phone — into a VanDyke Brown print dating back to the 19th century: choosing an image, adjusting contrast and tonal balance, inverting it to a negative, hand-coating cotton paper with a light-sensitive solution, exposing under UV light, then rinsing and fixing to reveal the print’s full depth and warmth. Each participant leaves with their own one-of-a-kind print.

Bichromate Gum is a photographic printing process invented in the early days of photography. William Henry Fox Talbot found that sensitized dichromated colloids such as gelatin and gum arabic became insoluble in water after exposure to sunlight; Alphonse Poitevin added carbon pigment in 1855, and John Pouncy used colored pigment with gum arabic in 1858 to create the first color images. We rediscover gently this pigment process with high security and environmental standards.

This session extends the introductory workshop into a full day of two three-hour sittings, giving more time to refine registration, layering, and color separation.

An improvement session for people who want to practice ancient processes in a creative and in-depth way, divided into cumulative one-day sittings covering paper selection and preparation, sensitizing, UV exposure, development, drying, whitening, finishing, and conservation of equipment — with permanent individual teaching and coaching aimed at the autonomy of participants. Combines Bichromate Gum with the salted paper process, one of the earliest photographic processes, invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1834, known for its soft, sepia-toned prints.

A comprehensive, three-session cyanotype program. Session 1 covers the basics of cyanotype printing — history, materials, image selection, negative preparation, mixing and applying the solution. Session 2 covers exposure and development — exposing coated paper to UV light, washing and drying prints. Session 3 covers post-processing and modifications — advanced finishing, tinting with agents such as tea and coffee staining. All chemicals, paper, UV lamps and materials are provided, with private, personalised instruction throughout.
