"Fabrics of Exile" is a collaborative project developed with thirteen women who frequent the EXIL mental health service, and photographers and visual artists Romane Iskaria and Maëlle Helias, supported by a team of professionals from the EXIL association.
Opening on Friday, May 3rd from 5pm to 9pm
with the thirteen women from the center, photographers Romane Iskaria and Maëlle Helias, and the EXIL center team.

from Wednesday to Sunday from 3pm to 6pm.

To root ourselves in the present and weave connections between each group member, we explored our "safe place" through photography and textiles.

The fabrics may be those of our everyday life, the ones we wish to wrap ourselves in for protection, or to evoke a particular memory. Over the course of our sixteen workshops, each woman, drawing from her personal story, came to seek out, rediscover, create, weave, and sew her own textile composition.

Using photography, Romane, with Maëlle's collaboration, took portraits of these women merging with their creations, transforming into backgrounds for photographic studios. Listening to factual stories, desires for elsewhere, and wishes for the here and now, she already plays, in these captured moments, the blur between reality and imagination.

Throughout the workshops, armed with disposable cameras, the women captured images of their "safe havens" in their Brussels daily life. From these shots, Maëlle introduced workshops on cyanotypes on fabrics, an ancient photography process invented by Anna Atkins in 1843.

Pour nous ancrer dans le présent et tisser des liens entre chaque membre du groupe, nous avons exploré notre « lieu sûr » à travers la photographie et le textile.

Les tissus peuvent être ceux de notre quotidien, ceux dans lesquels nous souhaitons nous envelopper pour nous protéger, ou pour évoquer un souvenir particulier. Au fil de nos seize ateliers, chaque femme, puisant dans son histoire personnelle, est venue chercher, redécouvrir, créer, tisser et coudre sa propre composition textile.

Par le biais de la photographie, Romane, avec la collaboration de Maëlle, a réalisé des portraits de ces femmes se fondant avec leurs créations, celles-ci devenant des toiles de fond pour des studios photographiques. À l’écoute de récits factuels, de désirs d’ailleurs et de souhaits pour l’ici et maintenant, elle joue déjà, dans ces instants saisis, sur le trouble entre réalité et imaginaire.

Tout au long des ateliers, armées d’appareils photo jetables, les femmes ont capturé des images de leurs « havres sûrs » dans leur quotidien à Brussels. À partir de ces clichés, Maëlle a proposé des ateliers de cyanotypie sur textile, un ancien procédé photographique inventé par Anna Atkins en 1843.

“Fabrics of Exile” is een gezamenlijk project, opgezet met dertien vrouwen die de dienst geestelijke gezondheidszorg EXIL bezoeken, en de fotografes en beeldend kunstenaars Romane Iskaria en Maëlle Helias, met de steun van een team van professionals van de vereniging EXIL.

Om ons in het heden te verankeren en banden te weven tussen elk lid van de groep, verkenden we onze “veilige plek” via fotografie en textiel.

De stoffen kunnen die van ons dagelijks leven zijn, de stoffen waarin we ons willen hullen ter bescherming, of om een bepaalde herinnering op te roepen. Doorheen onze zestien workshops kwam elke vrouw, vertrekkend vanuit haar persoonlijk verhaal, op zoek naar, herontdekte, creëerde, weefde en naaide ze haar eigen textielcompositie.

Via de fotografie maakte Romane, in samenwerking met Maëlle, portretten van deze vrouwen die versmelten met hun creaties, die op hun beurt achtergronden werden voor fotografische studio’s. Luisterend naar feitelijke verhalen, verlangens naar elders en wensen voor het hier en nu, speelt ze in deze vastgelegde momenten al met de vervaging tussen werkelijkheid en verbeelding.

Doorheen de workshops legden de vrouwen, gewapend met wegwerpcamera’s, beelden vast van hun “veilige havens” in hun dagelijks leven in Brussels. Op basis van deze opnames introduceerde Maëlle workshops cyanotypie op textiel, een oud fotografisch procedé, uitgevonden door Anna Atkins in 1843.
